Cecelia Condit

by Heidi Howard

The Brooklyn Rail, Oct 2008

Howard reviews Condit's retrospective at CUE Art Foundation, which she describes as tracing the psyches of American women. Howard comments that Condit's work shines when she juxtaposes humor and aesthetic appeal with horror and the grotesque. There is a progression in Condit's video, her earlier works are marked by feelings of trepidation and anxiety and often take place in urban settings, while her later works exhibit calm observation and natural environments and landscapes. Howard qualifies Condit's work as poetically ironic with captivating narratives that draw viewers into psychological puzzles of paranoia and joy.
