Hiroshima After Iraq
Moving Image Review & Art Journal (MIRAJ), 2012, v. 1, no. 1, pp. 136-141
Alice Haylett Bryan reviews Rosalyn Deutsche's book Three Studies in Art and War. Bryan delineates Deutsche's argument: contemporary art in the public sphere is operating through the "future anterior" to combat a violent group mentality, which has caused contemporary wars. Artists introduce a subjective understanding of "the other" without dominating it. However, Bryan argues that Deutsche uses Emmanuel Levinas's theory to analyze videos centred on Hiroshima by three different artists, while she fails to acknowledge Levinas's seminal text "Reality and its Shadow," which claims art is inferior in terms of affecting changes compared to criticism, because of its non-fluid relation with time.
