Introduction: Experiments in Documentary

by Lucas Hilderbrand

Millennium Film Journal, Spring/Summer 2009, no. 51, p. 11

Lucas Hilderbrand’s essay opens with a discussion on how documentary is inherently contradictory. He explores the documentary/experimental film hybrid, and other forms that challenge and push the boundaries of the documentary medium. With an extensive list of artists and works working in this genre, both contemporary and historical, the author explores and catalogues the potentiality within the genre of experimental documentary; urging that is functions as a medium that can offer historical revisions and holds space for representation.
