Keepers of the Power

by Carol Kalafatic

Gendering the Nation: Canadian Women's Cinema, 1999, pp. 109-119

Toronto: University of Toronto Press, 1999

This chapter from the book Gendering the Nation: Canadian Women's Cinema provides a case study on three indigenous female filmmakers, which include Loretta Todd, Shelley Niro, and Christine Welsh. Accordingly, the piece foregrounds the common themes that recur throughout their work such as the impact of oral history and storytelling on native communities, the importance of family in indigenous culture, and using film as a decolonizing tool that seeks to counter the archival violence done to native communities by settler cultures.
