WAIRUA

Rona Ngahuia Osborne & Dan Mace (New Zealand)

This year Vtape continues to engage with the important work being done by the imagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival with a co-sponsored publication that accompanies the exhibition WAIRUA at A Space Gallery. In collaboration with both imagineNATIVE and A Space, we have commissioned writer and academic Fiona P. McDonald to produce a major essay contextualizing both the material and digital realms present in Wairua. In referring to the space “between art and anthropology today”, her nuanced investigation of the cosmologies woven through traditional cultures speaks to the artists’ creation of a form of Maori “learning space” within the space of the gallery.

This exhibition runs September 27 – October 29, 2016. The artists will be present for a talk on Friday October 21, 5:30, as part of Art Crawl at 401. The publication is available at A Space (401 Richmond St. W., #110), and as a downloadable PDF on the imagineNATIVE and Vtape websites.
