water into fire

Zachery Longboy

1994, 10:30 minutes, colour, English

TAPECODE 040.03

In this performative piece, the artist continues his search for identity and placement in Canada's Multi-Cultural and First Nations arena. Longboy outs himself as a First Nations FAG, who is living with HIV and abruptly severs attached preconceptions of two-spirited peoples, forcing the First Nation's community to address him rather than the disease.

In a contemplative and meditative search, Longboy recollects how HIV / AIDS has affected him and the community around him, revealing a strength through loss.

"standing on a bed of pebbles/ water rushes over my feet/ the stream is covered in a canopy of leaves/ sunlight dances through the foliage/ the aroma of wild flowers and pine/ alive/ blood rushes through my veins/ seek a new freedom."
