TAPECODE 049.00

The tape attempts to address the nature and effects of male socialization by introducing anecdotal material from the author's past and present. The stories are chosen to suggest how male socialization, resulting from interaction with both father and mother, serves to stymie the desire and ability for men to communicate effectively. The implication is made that a boy's practice of hiding things under the bed does not undergo any real change on reaching manhood but that only the form that this practice of concealment takes changes. The visual component is primarily of a boy getting a haircut, and is manipulated to emphasize the insistence of the barber and the resistance of the boy. It is used as a general metaphor for male socialization. The title "Beware" functions to warn that shifting patterns of male behaviour may not be a reliable indicator that a new era of the "liberated man" is on the horizon.
