Colonization and The Beauty Ideal

Carla Murray

1982, 11:00 minutes, colour, English

TAPECODE 107.01

This tape was made to look at how women's oppression is in many ways similar to other colonized groups. Women accept the values of men, internalize them and look to men to validate their lives. The "beauty ideal" is part of the colonization process where "women compete", objectifying themselves in order to please men. A former model tells her story of feeling objectified in her trade.
