Revival

1983, 29:00 minutes, colour, English

TAPECODE 3086.01

Michael Brodie, in collaboration with Bill Roxborough, surveys the recent revival of the arts of the Haida and Tsimshian tribes of Northern B.C.. Revival examines the issues surrounding the revival and the role artists have played in creating it. Artists appearing include Bill Reid, Jim Hart, Doreen Jenson, Robert Davidson, Norman Tait, Dorothy Grant, and Reg Davidson. Animation sequences show the principles of Northwest Coast design and live demonstrations follow the creation of Haida and Tsimshian masks, production of a silkscreen print, the sewing of a button blanket, and scenes from dance performances. Attitudes regarding the role of women artists, problems facing younger artists, and issues of ceremony versus commercialisation are expressed by the artists themselves.
