Neo Geo: An American Purchase

Peter Callas

1989, 09:17 minutes, colour

TAPECODE 301.09

The title "Neo Geo" is a veiled reference to "The New World" and what America has made of it. Many of the American territories were originally called "Purchases", bought as they were from other Western colonial powers (France, Spain, Tzarist Russia).

This tape utilizes popular icons drawn from American culture to potray the processes of "endocolonization", by which governments, lacking any real terrain to colonize at "the end of History", enact imperialsit designs on their own poulations. The mind of the "American" is the virtual and infinitely manipulable terrain of "Neo Geo". Music by Stephen Vitiello and John Zorn.
