Based on the installation, my motivation in this piece was to explore several notions surrounding the imposition of society's constructions on both human activity and the natural world. I wanted to create a meditative area within the public venue of the bookstore which would act as a sort of sacred space, perhaps even a memorial. I agree with Chilean poet Pablo Neruda in seeing a role for the artist as one who performs rituals of celebration or mourning. (The title Ceremony of Ashes refers to one of Neruda's melancholy poems in which this idea is developed.)
