Soul - Blind

Edward Lam

1986, 13:00 minutes, colour, English

TAPECODE 321.01

"Soul-Blind is a restaging and reworking from the introduction of a performance of mine from 1986.
Soul-Blind is an examination about the notions of stylized presentations and 'entertainment;' ie., what constitutes entertainment, as well as attempting to produce entertainment. Parallel to these concerns are issues dealing with aspects of race, manipulation. A Black actor is employed to present these ideas in the format of a monologue, constantly referring to "Mister Lam" as the author and director of these statements he is forced to repeat. The tape operates as a direct address to the viewer, functioning in a manner not unlike a demonstration or an essay." -E.L.
