The Mekarôn compilation contains the 7 short pieces produced by a collective formed at the The Banff Centre Community Residency in Winter 1993. The residency brought together a group of 40 artists whose work and prespective had in common a relationship to social and community issues. The artists were involved in four different projects, including Mekarôn: a collective of eight visual artists addressing issues of langauge and communication in an inter-ethnic context.

1.
Mekarôn, Tiuré Potiguara, 5:40 minutes.
A fast sequence of images (filmed in Super 8, VHS, Super VHS, Hi 8) situated between fiction and reality, for what used to be beautiful, real for what suggests tragedy. Only painful can be this lecture with an ending which is certainly sad; colonization. It is an invitation for the spectator to visualize the impact of indigenous reality throughout the window of a moving train. The two stations are called Brazil and Canada.
"I have in my hand a visual manifest, bloodstained with 500 years of history." - Tiuré Potiguara

2. Bootsin, Solomon Tzeggai, 2:53 minutes
Under the heavy boots of oppression, a voice rises up.

3. The Third Mind, Mark Handley, 3:51 minutes
When two people enter a conversation, they can reach a place neither has been before. Using the metaphor of the river, the artist creates the environment of that third mind.

4. Dig Dig Dig, Melanie Fei-Lin Boyle, 2:43 minutes
Canada as a postcard. The static landscape is inaccessible and unreal.

5.
Terra, Carole Beaulieu, 7:30 minutes
Carole Beaulieu has produced a number of public art projects ranging from graffiti to integration of art and architecture. She worked on the conception and development of the Nitassinan mural in Montréal and the Great Whale mural. She was part of the Great Whale Artists Project, a collective of ten artists who visited Whapmagoostui in the summer of 1991. The group toured exhibitions in support of the James Bay Cree's position against the Hydro Québec project.

6.
Dog And Fish, Sabrina Matthews, 3:30 minutes
Sabrina Matthews has been trained in printmaking and photography. She was the co-founder of Artifact, a collective of community artists who produce murals in Montréal and in Nicaragua. She was a member of Articule and was the coordinator of the Nitassinan mural in Montréal in 1990.

7.
Des Bouches et Le Rose et Le Brun, Martine Crispo, 4:42 minutes
Martine Crispo has devoted herself to music and research in various processes in the field of radio transmission since 1986.
