Dignity And Grace

Charlie Fox and Mark Hamilton

1993, 55:00 minutes, English

TAPECODE 901.01

Broadcast on TVO's From The Heart in August of 1993. Over a period of eight months, the videomakers chronicled the staging of a community-based play in the Eramosa township east of Guelph. Local farmers and townspeople acted out the history of the region often representing their ancestors, and together approximately 200 residents staged the tremendously successful play, "The Spirit Of Shivaree" for ten nights in June 1990 to sold out audiences. The video explores the community's ongoing struggle to preserve fertile farmland for food production instead of housing developments for the rich.

Dignity and Grace captures all the emotion of the predominant theme of the play, which is also a predominant theme for Eramosa residents in real life; agricultural land being rapidly transformed into urban housing developments. At the same time Dignity and Grace tells the story of the community play process and the lasting effect that it can have on a small community like Eramosa.
