Centuries ago, Pow Wow began as an honoring of warriors. The Eagle feathers, colors and designs, song and dance have reinforced respect for tradition throughout North America. The drum has spiritually united all peoples to celebrate the "heart beat of Mother Earth."
Pow Wow begins in a thousand places, from the dim winter's light of a grandmother's kitchen to lessons learned at an elder's knee. It is a bead stitched, a sinew wrapped, a search for a song...Like a mystery, these slender threads came together, exploding onto the arena floor at Manitoba's First Nations Peoples International Pow Wow. A Warrior's Dream captures the spirit and color of those three autumn days-from the ancient majesty of the Eagle Dance to modern pyrotechnics. Years of work and practice by more than 600 dancers are captured from eight camera angles. We move from competition in 23 dance catagories to the selection of Champion Dancers.
It is all here: the ancient sounds of the Northern Arctic in the songs of the Inuit throat singers; the high energy performance by rapper/actor Litefoot ("The Indian in the Cupboard"); the artistry and symbolism of a hoop dance with more than 20 hoops.
