Fear is inside and outside. Fear is a state of mind. Fear is something we take from childhood and pass on to our children. Fear is an experience that is different for women than it is for men. Science is in the business of conquering our fears. Statistics seek to contain accidental futures by predicting them. This is how we learn to fear the future.: one in seven women will develop breast cancer.
This tape explores different landscapes of fear across five short and seemingly unrelated stagings: a woman alone in her apartment; an interactive video devoted to treating 'panic attacks; a research program studying sexually abused girls; an interview with George Melies about science and cinema; and finally, a woman preparing to give birth. Each story creates a different pattern in the juxtaposition of science, women and fear. In the culture of science, what many women have come to fear most are numbers. An evocative, challenging and haunting tape.
