Maxwell's Demon

Independent minded femme fatale Helvetica Bold is having a child - her way. But when the perm bank operator, Rosetta Stone, mysteriously commits suicide Helvetica Bold turns to gumshoe Dick Valard. His investigation leads him to the hapless astronomer Maxwell, a participant in strange dream experiments in Rosetta Stone's lab and also Helvetica Bold's unwitting sperm donor. As Dick Valard delves into Helvetica Bold's past, Maxwell's Demon catches up with him...

Shot in shimmering black and white on a low budget in Calgary, Alberta. David Clark's first feature is an eccentric postmodern reworking of a classic Greek myth in the guise of film noir, complete with a big band score by Jeff Toyne. It also pays sly homage to the film classics: The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Fellini's 8 &1/2, Last Year at Marienbad, 2001: A Space Odyssey and Blue Velvet.
