Canal and Broadway

TAPECODE 088.00

The video was made at the intersection of Canal and Broadway in New York. From a stationary camera at eye level, the point of view of a pedestrian is recorded from the four corners. For the first half of the video, the camera records the view between the lines of the crosswalks; for the second half, it records diagonally across the corners of the intersection. As both pedestrians and drivers negotiate through their designated precincts, the intensity o the place is evidenced through facial expressions, traffic movement and sounds. The video is meant to draw attention to the effects of negotiating the lines of inclusion and exclusion which regulate and channel our movement through public urban space.
