History of the Luiseño People: La Jolla Reservation Christmas 1990

James A. Luna and Isaac Artenstein

1990, 27:40 minutes, colour, English

This work was first presented as an installation art work with it's title and centerpiece of a Christmas tree adorned at it's top with a "beer can star". The message of a not so happy Christmas was made very clear and the stark setting called for more like an empty stage set, thus the "Christmas" performance was developed.
Luna says "In explaining the work the alcohol references are there but I want the viewer to see beyond the oblivious. I would like the audience to see and listen to the script to experience the actions and emotions of love, control/out of control, of denial and of cause and effect... these elements all make up and come to light on the fictionalized night of Christmas 1990.
