Mysterial Power is both personal of knowledge through interactions with family, spirituality, and everyday life in Taiwan. Through documentation from 1995-1997 the video depicts the struggle that takes place between the videographer as an observer and participant in the field of her Taiwanese family’s daily life and religious practice. More of an absent center than the video’s actual center, the maker’s adolescent cousin, who communicates with one of the Taiwanese local gods, served as the inspiration for the project. The figure of the spiritual medium acts as a translator between different categories of experience. As one who mediates between the strange and familiar, she offers a shifting vantage point from which we can view cultural constructions of knowledge, belief, and reality.
