Within These Cages
2002, 06:47 minutes, colour, English / Tagalog
Toronto cultural activist, Faith Nolan takes us into San Francisco County Jail where she sings with a group of women. Through songs sung by inmates, we see how music is both a cultural and emotional expression that provides a form of survival for these women. Critical Resistance organizer, Julia Sudbury reveals the unjust criminalization of women and the harsh realities for inmates. Music can motivate emotional survival and link women both inside and outside the prison.
A short documentary on the power of music to be part of women's survival in a prison.
