Kritik an Reiner's Vernunft [Kritik of Reiner's Judgement]

Keith Sanborn

2002, 08:00 minutes, colour, German/English sub

TAPECODE 081.06

This work explores the occult relationship between Emmanuel Kant and Raphaël Kühberger. It derives from a unique children's talent contest on Austrian television I happened across while visiting Cologne earlier this year. I was fascinated by the perverse seriousness of the critique devoted to this children's accordion performance, complete with Olympic style scoring. Here, I saw a unique opportunity by evoking Kant's Kritik der reinen Vernunft - shaggy dog-style-to critique this ritual if intellectualized projection of spectacular power. Ironically, I ended up with a virus on my computer acquired in the process of sampling the footage.

Available in three versions: German language, English subtitled version, both versions together. The final version in which the German language is followed by the english subtitled version is the perferred one for screening purposes and is 8:00 minutes long.
