Double Take explores the memory of identical twins whom together experienced a traumatic childhood event. Using juxtaposed images and concurrent storylines, the viewer is challenged to examine the similarities and differences of the twin’s tales. As the image of the twins present us with a literal double take, their parallel stories take us even further into the recesses and disparities of human memory. As the story unfolds, the viewer absorbs nuances, at times with details in perfect agreement, at others in conflict and yet again with one twin recounting a new memory that the other does not recall. Based on a true story, the notion of the double take is also part of the work’s formal construction. Shot using two cameras, the work is a reconstruction of the actual twin’s stories performed by twin actresses. As a re-staging of actual events, it also calls into question the distinction between fiction and reality.
