2007, 08:15 minutes, colour, English
Filmed at the monthly Asian night in Toronto, the video is a documentary of the ghettoized young men negotiating their desire and identity in the margins of the gay world. On the surface of the hypnotic ambiance and the dreamy images of boys dancing, we read the exchanges among the individuals. Seductive and playful but possibly full of lies and deceits, Discopedia studies and spells out the language of desire and the psycho social dynamics of the club culture.
The video is filmed in the portrait (vertical) format, a humanistic approach to videography, while the subtitles feel almost like Asian calligraphy -- it is raining “text”!
“I have always wanted to do a Pop-up Video. And Discopedia is the closest no-budget version that I have come up with!” - Ho Tam
This video also comes in a 15 minute extended version (in portrait mode/vertical format) for installation/projection.
