This video documents a performance that is part of a broader project called Free Sugar which lasted from 2002-2006. In a nutshell, Free Sugar promoted a method for repairing any holes in one’s life with pink icing and pink pudding. The project aimed to critique marketing strategies that create false problems in order to sell solutions that often make the situation worse. Free Sugar took the form of photographs, videos, a website and performances. In this manifestation of the project, the artist installed a kiosk in an art fair and distributed kits to assist people in repairing the holes in their lives with pink icing. This piece humorously treats any hole (standard or not, metaphorical or real) as a problem that should be repaired through an absurd method that will inadvertently make it worse. The free do it yourself kits satirize home repair kits and self-help industries that present overly simplistic solutions to complex problems.
