Impostor: The Audition

Robert Lendrum

2009, 12:44 minutes, colour, English

TAPECODE 326.06

Through obsessive research, including a market research survey, information regarding Lendrum’s physical, social, subjective and political self was gathered in an effort to map and quantify his identity. Seventy-seven of his friends, family, co-workers, acquaintances and former lovers provided data through the survey. This information was synthesized into a market research style report with pie charts and bar graphs. The report was then given to actors responding to a call for auditions. Disguised with dyed black hair, glasses and suit, Lendrum runs the audition as "Ben Reilly" so as not to influence the actors' performances. The resulting documentation is an absurd look at identity enactment, gender, interpretation and behaviour.

Impostor: The Audition (2006-9) is the first in a series of videos entitled Impostor: A Self-Portrait (326.07).
