Osmosis of the Unicorn

Isabell Spengler

2009, 12:00 minutes, colour

TAPECODE 964.09

Three women - some dressed up as unicorns, some as virgins – meet, startle and seduce one another in the forest. The film was produced for the "LIVE FILM! Jack Smith! Five Flaming Days in a Rented World" Festival 2009 in Berlin and is a homage to the New York filmmaker and performance artist Jack Smith (1932-1989).

Inspired by the idiosyncratic iconography and the anti-capitalist production style of Jack Smith, all costumes were made by hand. The film was shot on 16mm and is accompanied by a soundtrack composed from a wild variety of sounds and music including old Hawaiin songs, a French birdcall record and self-made synthesizer sounds. The picture mixes the fantasies of adolescent girls with “normal love” and normal masquerade.
