Artists never have enough money to live on and spend a lot of time thinking about economics. Economies are built in layers. Economies are usually defined from the bottom up as resources, manufacturing, services, information and knowledge, tourism and outer space. Artists are most likely to be valued in the information and knowledge sector of the economy. This information and knowledge sector has evolved into the gift economy, the economy of attention, the economy of experience, and the economy of existence. Artists have known for some time that the new economy is the economy of existence.
