Serpent Brain

1990, 01:17 minutes, colour

TAPECODE 9729

Constructed from three different formats, super 8 film, still photography and colour photo copy multiple page enlargements, these mediated images have their source in Butler's sculptural models of human embryonic development. They share an indexical relationship to both visual art and medical research. The Serpent Brain audio is a colloquial text by Doug Melnyk retelling a story "collected" from Jack Butler about this worrisome state of sexual ambiguity. It is Butler's voice that you can hear on the videotape. Like old-time radio, Serpent Brain requires the audience to participate with a rich investment of imagination.
