Our heroine Madelaine sits reading in her parlor, when an unexpected visitor arrives. So begins the surreal narrative of La Petite Mort (2013) a tale of love, betrayal, and one vengeful butterfly. Combining elements of erotica, horror, and dark humour, this film capitalizes on the stiff, artificial movement of paper puppets to create a strange, dream-like world. La Petite Mort was inspired by the Surrealist animations of the Polish and Czech masters Jan Lenica, Walerian Borowyck and Jan Svankmajer, Japanese tentacle erotica, and those strange, middle-of-the- night dreams one sometimes has after spicy food.
