Oriental Drag, is a stop motion that consists of one-thousand photographs. The poses in each image are inspired by hip hop, vogue, and traditional Iranian dancing. The dance style addresses the hybridity of the character’s identity and experiences in the diaspora.

The visibility and construction of the studio space is synonymous with the construction of cultural identity. The set consists of many cultural artifacts and cliche motifs of Middle- Eastern art such as: the persian rug, slippers, traditional garments and golden tea set. It may appear as though I am masquerading around as the
other but my intention is to critically highlight this exotification and not to further perpetuate it; this is why the construction of the space is visible.

The music was created in collaboration with DJ Ashley Gauthier and many of the sounds are made with household items including a glass and a fork. I played these instruments and the voice in the audio is my own.
