Ugly Beauty

Margaret Dragu and Moira Simpson

2016, 11:06 minutes, colour, no language

TAPECODE 117.32

Dragu invited a registered nurse and a series of artists to learn “how to bathe a senior” from viewing a video of the previous bath giver, echoing the process of decay, memory loss (intentional, unintentional, subconscious). This process was also a way of instilling muscle memory about the comfort of being touched by a stranger in Dragu herself, in preparation for the time when she is no longer able to bathe herself. This practice is meant to reinforce the memory in her body that allows her to accept this care. The bathing footage is intercut with a daily dance diary of mirror movements as Dragu searches for both beautiful and ugly angles of her face and body.

(NB: this video is also part of Commodification of Touch installation.)
