I'm fine, thank you. And you?

Ask any young student in Japan how they are doing, and he or she is sure to know the answer: “I’m fine, thank you. And you?” A reflection on living and teaching in Tohoku, Japan, this work invites viewers to consider the complexities of negotiating etiquette, emotion, values, body language and public persona. Which factors influence other people’s perceptions of us? How important is it that we see ourselves a certain way? Whether we are Canadian, Japanese, or otherwise, our daily lives are coloured by a thousand small decisions about how to find the nakamichi, that middle distance between our “real” selves and what we project.
