Self Love Limits
2013, 05:24 minutes, colour
In this performance for video, I apply red lipstick to my lips and start to kiss each part of my body that I can reach. My body folds over and contorts as I attempt to make loving contact, in the form of a red lipsticked kiss, with the parts of my body that are difficult to reach. As the performance proceeds, it becomes clear that there are limits to my capacity for self-care — indeed, the visual mapping of lip prints, which resemble wounds or blemishes, reveal the areas that remain untouched or unaffected by my actions of self-affection. Who can fill the space that remains? The video becomes a visual metaphor for the limits of self care, and the need for more communal and collective notions of care.
