In this 20-minutes performance titled, “Vagina Painting (After Kubota),” I use canvas, jars of red wine, paint, a bouquet of white roses, an old washbasin and candles to create a ritual space for abstract painting. During the performance a camera projects the painting onto a large screen behind me. When making the painting, I paint first with dots of red wine, then I drip and pour red paint onto the canvas. I use various strategies to connect my body and paint to the canvas. Near the end of the performance, paint leaks from my underwear directly onto the canvas referencing menstrual flow. My intention with “Vagina Painting (After Kubota)” is an homage to artist and Fluxus member Shigeko Kubota. It’s a performance that celebrates women’s bodies as the source of life, attempting to challenge ideologies around hatred, dominance and control of the female body.
