The Advocate

Jeremiah Barber

2019, 12:29 minutes, colour, English

TAPECODE 2101.06

In this several-year project, Barber runs into fog drenched landscapes and clambers up rocky outcroppings to add his voice to the harmonic sound of the San Francisco Bay’s foghorns. Mirroring the horns, the artist’s voice is a signal that attempts (but fails) to help incoming ships navigate the rocky terrain. There are nineteen operable foghorns in the San Francisco Bay; the most iconic are the two sited on the Golden Gate Bridge, which play in a harmonic third. The absurdity of this performance is largely ignored by tourists, with the exception of children, who chime in to assist.
