The Transgressive Camera: Drawing the Line

by Marusia Bociurkiw

Afterimage, Jan. 1989, v. 16, no. 6, pp. 18 - 19

Review of Drawing the Line, an "interactive photo-event depicting lesbian sexualities", showing at Women In Focus Gallery in Vancouver, B.C., Aug. 20 - Sept. 9, 1988. The artists were Emma Stonebridge, Susan Stewart, and Persimmon Blackbridge, forming the "Kiss and Tell" collective. Their works address sexual difference, state censorship, representation, & pornography. "Lesbian-made pornography presents an important alternative to heterosexual porn, yet it separates itself from feminism as though it too would interrupt pleasure. But the artists' ongoing politically charged discussions and involvement in the community ... gave them a familiarity with each other and a sense of confidence and humour that speak clearly in the photographs."
