Feature Film Industry Dying Without Whimper from Ottawa

by Keith Ross Leckie

The Toronto Star, Aug. 18, 1995

Keith Ross Leckie, scriptwriter whose credits include Trial at Fortitude Bay, The Bruce Curtis Story, Where the Spirit Lives, and Lost in the Barrens declares the feature film industry in Canada dead. "What I'm looking for here is mainstream, classic Canadian films about ourselves. There are none."

The Canadian government's weak initiatives to levy taxes from American films, or legislate quotas on Canadian content in cinemas, have been met with threats from the American industry. Leckie finds the support given to the feature film industry lacking when compared the support given to writers and music in Canada and writes, "I'd always thought I would soon write Canadian feature films for people to see in theaters. This isn't going to happen."
