Don't Let the Mayor See That

by Gary Kinsman and Lynn Beavis

Parallelogramme, Summer 1994, v. 20, no. 1, p. 22

A subsection concluding the "STOP CENSORSHIP!" article written by Artspace's artistic director Lynn Beavis questions notions of art in relation to censorship due to obscenity charges filed against Peterborough's Artspace on March 3rd 1994. The basis of the "Artspace Controversy" revolves around the installation of 12 women artists' work, one of which was a painted quilt representing a menstruating female nude which received complaints from locals and Mayor Jack Doris.

The controversy resulted in a petition for an (unreturned) apology from the mayor and the subsequent Women's Day Parade became a scene of protest. Artspace however, has received more support and increased membership numbers following the controversy.
