Inuit films still in infancy

by Jay Stone

The Ottawa Citizen, June 27, 1995

Jay Stone analyzes the developing Inuit video production from the Igloolik community, with support from the Tariagsuk Video Centre (which was established in 1991 to facilitate Inuit video production and counteract the influence of mainstream Canadian television). Stone describes the transnational nature of Marie Cousineau's Correspondence, 1991, Excerpts due to the implementation of multilingual monologues, while Home Video Contest Compilation comprises the final products from the women's video workshop run by organizer Marie Helene Cousineau. Stone cites the respective Inuit video productions as a beginning of a vernacular art form.
