Four Artists of Sensuality
Arts Magazine, Mar. 1975, v. 49, no. 7, pp. 73-75
Eleanor Antin, Lynda Benglis, Judith Bernstein, and Hannah Wilke are reviewed in terms of sexuality and self-discovery. Cindy Nemser surveys the work of these four women who are both in and out of the politicized women's movement: some, like Wilke's performance, are suggestive of androgyny, yet also, female sensuality. Bernstein focussed on the phallus, and the masculine associations with size, power, and resistance. Benglis' work contrasts these ideas in its exploration of women's sensuality with a masturbatory approach. Antin creates 4 distinct persona, but each combine gendered qualities to form varying degrees of androgyny. This dated article provides valuable insight in to the women's movement as expressed in contemporary art of the 70's.
