The Ongoing Powers of Dana Claxton

by Jeremy Todd

Fierce: Women's Hot Blooded Film/Video, Mar. 2010, pp. 28-31

Hamilton: McMaster Museum of Art, 2010

Jeremy Todd writes on four video's of Dana Claxton included in the Fierce: Women's Hot Blooded Film/Video exhibition. Claxton is an aboriginal artist heavily influenced by "her Lakota world view - relations of value, belief, cultural practice and knowledge particular to her Hunkpapa Lakota Sioux ancestry and community - while utilizing signage and forms derived from a global mediascape". Claxton combines seductive, while generic, manipulations of mass-cultural and canonized forms; leading legacies of violence that antagonize the pluralistic body politic resulting in an investigation on the stakes of humanness.
