Shame on Her: Allyson Mitchell

by Julia Bryan-Wilson

Fierce: Women's Hot Blooded Film/Video, Mar. 10, 2010, pp. 32-33

Hamilton: McMaster Museum of Art, 2010

Julia Bryan-Wilson discusses the work of Allyson Mitchell in the Fierce: Women's Hot Blooded Film/Video exhibition. Mitchell's "maximalist" practice reclaims hobby-craft in work that is dually full of humor and political critique. "Her objects, films and activist initiatives use humour as a political tool, exploring questions of domestic labour, same-sex desire, and female representation". The result is artwork that is politically engaged, honest and direct.
