Prototype, 1986

by Todd Davis and Max Dean

Video Guide, 1986, v. 8, no. 2, p. 18

A review by Todd Davis of Max Dean's video installation, "Prototype," part of "Luminous Sites," a larger exchibition of Canadian video art in Vancouver. "Prototype" is a kinetic, closed circuit video installation that requires viewer participation to set the istallation in motion and, in effect, complete the circuit. Davis reflects on this installation's connection to art of the 1960s and -70s surrounding the body. He raises questions about how the element of manipulation in Dean's installation relates to ideas about the body as subject, the body as object, the body as "prop," the role of the viewer.
