Multimix: The Failure of Technology
Video Guide, Spring 1991, v. 11, no. 1, p. 18
Taking the view that technology has failed to produce the once promised breakthoughs in communication, this article examines a shift in performance art from employing multimedia to adopting older performing art forms such as theatre, dance and music. Whereas performance art in the '70s and 80's was concerned with exploring newer technologies, it has now shifted towards a more personalized storytelling style, moving away from visual art to a multi-disciplinary approach. Comparing perfomance art to the more structured forms of theatre and dance, the author mantains that what remains constant in performance art is the possibility of a single voice and vision.
