Clear about Confused

by Sara Diamond

Video Guide, Mar. 1984, v. 6, no. 2, pp. 7-10

The exhibition Confused, Sexual Views, a project by Paul Wong, Gary Bourgeois, Gina Daniels and Jeanette Reinhardt, was cancelled three days before it was due to open at the Vancouver Art Gallery. This article "summarizes the issues, strategies and demands of the Paul Wong defense campaign." Diamond believes that VAG cancelled the show, which was an open and in depth exploration of contemporary sexual mores, because of fear of criticism from corporate sponsors and conservative government funding bodies. She criticizes VAG and its director, Luke Rombout, for the lack of willingness to engage in critical debates with the artistic community and the community at large. Excerpts from Paul Wong's installation Sexual Views are included in this article as is Wong's artist statement.
