Keith Sonnier:: Video and Film as Color-Field

by Robert Pincus-Witten

Artforum, May Spring 1972, v. 10, no. 9, pp. 35-37

Robert Pincus-Witten delves into the visual techniques employed by Keith Sonnier of using reversed images and mirrors in his works to engage the audience, defying the Hollywood norm of creating a passive viewer. However, his way of structuring light in film is said to provide little mental substance but brilliant ambience akin to paintings of the 1960s. Pincus-Witten goes on to compare Sonnier's works to those of artist James Rosenquist, who he appears to have inherited various ideas from.
