From Compilation to Collage: The Found-Footage Films of Arthur Lipsett; The Martin Walsh Memorial Lecture 2007

by William C. Wees

Canadian Journal of Film Studies, Fall, v. 16, no. 2, pp. 2-22

Arthur Lipsett, inspired by compilation documentaries such as the Canada Carries On series, was a leading figure in the found-footage film movement in the 1950s and 60s. In this article, William C. Wees concentrates his analysis on three films, Very Nice, Very Nice (1961), A Trip Down Memory Lane (1965) and Fluxes (1968). Wees looks at the filmmaker's collage methods and their connection to Walter Benjamin's unfinished Arcades Project.
