Pe'l A'tukwey: let me…tell a story. Recent Work by Mi’kmaq and Maliseet Artists.
Halifax: Art Gallery of Hamilton, 1993
ISBN/ISSN 0-88871-269-3
Catalogue accompanying exhibition "Pe'l A'tukwey", held at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia (AGNS) from September 11 to November 14, 1993. The exhibition showcased the work of seventeen contemporary Mi'kmaq and Maliseet artists in the context of current events and with reference to the concept of "Indian art." O'Neill examines the works as "stories told" about the land, family ties, the real and the stereotypical past, the present, and the future. Artists' statements. Biographical notes. [taken from /e-artexte.ca] "As individual artists’ they defy the stereotyped concept that there is only one type on Indian art. As a group, they reinforce the vitality of Indian art. This long overdue exhibition presents recent works of art that challenge our current definitions of Indian art. Many of the artists in this exhibition have been practising artists for the last twenty years. These artists have attained national recognition as outstanding artists yet they are just recently being shown in the art institutions on the east coast." -[Source: Viviane Gray’s curatorial statement, page 1 of the catalogue]. Catalogue contains forewords, a curator's statement, artists' statements, a list of works, a list of lenders and list of members of the collaborative committee who helped make the exhibition possible. Also includes colour images of artworks included in the exhibition throughout.
