P L A I N S is an installation that draws on three aspects of Kisil's life growing up in Winnipeg; his father, religion, and the farm. The content looks at Ukrainian culture in Western Canada as a vehicle into a larger discussion about the changing social landscape of contemporary Prairie society. The trend to urbanization is having a direct effect on rural block settlement, which are the cornerstones of western colonization, and the bastions of Ukrainian life in this country. Rural youth, who can see little financial return on the enormous personal investment required to survive on the land, are moving to urban centres where the opportunities are greater. This urbanization is having a direct effect on country life and is not conducive to the retention of Ukrainian ethnic identity.
